RE: SHIFT INDICATOR
SYSTEM - FAULT TRACING

700 SERIES

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO THE U.S. AND CANADA.

SHIFT INDICATOR: Vehicles with manual transmission use a micro processor-controlled shift indicator system. The driver is signaled to upshift by an indicator lamp in the instrument panel.

COMPONENTS: The system comprises a control unit located near the hood release, and a clutch pedal switch to signal the control unit that a gear shift has taken place.
The control unit receives engine RPM signals from Terminal 1 on the ignition coil and vehicle speed information from the speedometer. The control unit also receives signals from the overdrive relay.

MEMORY: If current is interrupted to the control unit (e.g. disconnecting the battery), the memory is erased and the control unit must be reprogrammed.

To program the control unit:--Drive the car in each forward gear for at least 8 seconds. The indicator lamp will flash once as each gear is programmed.

SHIFT INDICATOR SELF DIAGNOSIS

P-70

The system is capable of testing continuity of associated circuits.

The battery must be DISCONNECTED and then RECONNECTED to activate the check circuit.

With the ignition switch ON; engine OFF
NOTE: Field reports show: 1.) Using the clutch pedal as a footrest causes incorrect system operation and must be avoided. 2.) Proper clutch adjustment is critical to correct system operation and improper clutch adjustment seems to cause the most problems.
