Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair



Replacing dashboard

Remove:

Note! The car may be equipped with SRS on both the driver's and passenger sides.

Disconnect battery negative lead.

Remove:
(passenger side:)






- soundproofing panels (panel under glove compartment).
- glove compartment.






- cowl panel.
- A-pillar cover.
- screw holding dashboard to A-pillar.
Disconnect sun sensor connector.
Cut all tie straps on the wiring.






(driver's side:)
- sound proofing panels (panel under steering wheel).
- knee bolster. Leave the bracket in place on the knee bolster undo it at the floor.






- cowl panel.
- A-pillar cover.
- screw holding dashboard to A-pillar.






- defroster cover. Insert a steel putty knife between the dashboard and defroster vent by the clips.

Tap with a wooden mallet to remove the defroster vent.

- dashboard from upper cowl panel. Insert a screwdriver into the holes in the clips press and at the same time gently pull the dashboard.

- screws and clips holding the fusebox.






- ashtray.
- screws holding the dashboard center console.
- screws holding the parking brake console. Pull the console backward.
- lower center console mounting (screws under ashtray).

Cars without SRS:






- steering wheel.
- the steering wheel adjustment control (Allen screw).
- panels by control stalks on steering column.
- control stalks on steering column.

Cars equipped with SRS:

Wheels straight ahead.






- the steering wheel adjustment control (Allen screw).
- steering column covers.






Slacken off the two screws (torx) behind the steering wheel.
Separate connector.
Lift out steering wheel airbag module.






Remove the steering wheel center screw. Remove the screw from its parking hole in the steering wheel (the screw should never be removed from the plastic strip)
Secure the screw in the pin on the upper right-hand side of the steering wheel.

- The contact reel is now locked in its zeroed position.

Note! Do not turn the steering wheel, the locking pin will break.

Lift out steering wheel.






- contact reel.
- control stalks on steering column.

760, 1988- and 960 -1994

Remove:






- cover beside steering wheel. Press out from behind with your fingers.
- the narrow trim strip beside the steering wheel.
- lighting controls.






cover over heater controls. Press out from behind with your fingers.

960 1995-

The panel around the heater controls radio and ashtray is in one section.
It divides at the steering wheel.
As an option and in certain markets:
There is a wooden veneer bonded to the panels.

Note! These panels are very fragile and must be removed and installed very carefully.

Wood veneer and plastic panels are removed and installed in the same way.

Remove panels

Remove the lighting control panel with a weatherstrip tool. (on the left in left-hand drive cars and on the right in right-hand drive cars.)






Tilt steering wheel to lower position.






Remove cover over steering wheel.






Fold out soundproofing panels by center console.
Unscrew screws holding center console.






Lift center console cover.
Remove plastic washer at bottom of compartment.
Remove both screws.
Pull center console backward.

Remove Radio:






Remove radio.

Note! If the car has a large fronted radio, remove the divider between the upper and lower radio trays.

Remove Ashtray:






Remove the ashtray.
Slacken off both screws at the bottom of the panel.






Remove the panel by the upper clip with a weatherstrip tool.






Insert a screwdriver as illustrated and undo the clip while pulling the panel out slightly.
Mask the edge of the panel by the clip with tape to prevent damage.
Do the same on the other side.





Remove the panel with a circular motion as illustrated.





Disconnect control button connectors.
Pry out control buttons.

Note! Install according to panel 960 1995-.






- cover around combined instrument panel.
- combined instrument panel 760/960 (see illustration).
- heater control panel.
- radio console.
Remove defroster ducts from vents.
Cut off all cable ties behind the dashboard.






Remove dashboard from cowl panel.
Insert a screwdriver into the hole in the clip press and at the same time gently pull the dashboard.
Go from one side to the other.
Unclip the clips in the cowl member by turning them a 1/3 turn.
Insert fusebox through hole.

Carefully lift out dashboard
At the same time disconnect the cable harnesses from the dashboard on both sides of the steering column.
Ensure that no wiring remains connected.

Install:






Lift dashboard into position. Align clips with cowl panel.
Pass fusebox through hole and secure.
Connect cable harnesses to the dashboard on both sides of the steering column.

Driver's side:
- screw holding dashboard to A-pillar.
- defroster ducts to vents.
- screws holding dashboard to steering column (x 2).

- combined instrument panel
- cover around combined instrument panel.

Note! For 960 cars model year 1995- see Install panel 960. 1995-

- trim strip beside radio console
- radio console.
- heater control panel.
- cover beside steering wheel.

Install panel 960, 1995-

Connect connectors.
Install control buttons.






Position panel without pressing clips into place.






Install lighting control panel with the larger panel.






Carefully press the panel assembly into place.
Screw upper steering wheel cover into place.






- screws holding the dashboard center console.
- lower center console mounting (screws under ashtray).
- ashtray.
- parking brake console.






- lighting controls
- narrow trim strip beside steering wheel.
- cover beside steering wheel.

Install:

Without SRS:
- control stalks on steering column.
- panels by control stalks on steering column.
- the steering wheel adjustment control.
- steering wheel.

With SRS:






- control stalks on steering column.
- contact reel.

Note! Do not turn the steering wheel: The contact reel pin will shear off.

- steering wheel.






Route the cable from the contact reel through the hole in the steering wheel.
Position the steering wheel so that the contact reel locking pin is in the center of the hole in the steering wheel.
Install screw holding steering wheel and finger tighten. Remove locking screw from the plastic strip.





Check that the steering wheel is straight: Drive the car straight ahead on a flat surface.
If the steering wheel is off-center:
Install the locking screw again.

Remove the steering wheel.
Turn the wheels a little (from outside) so that the steering column is in the correct position.
Install steering wheel.
When the steering wheel is straight.
Remove screw in plastic strip from pin and install in parking hole in the steering wheel.
Tighten screw holding steering wheel.
Tighten to = 33 Nm.






Rest lower part of steering wheel airbag module on steering wheel.
Connect connector.
Fold in steering wheel airbag module and screw into place from behind (2 x torx).
Tighten to = 8 Nm.
Check that the cable is not trapped.
Check that steering wheel airbag module is secure.
- steering column covers.
- the steering wheel adjustment control.

Driver's side:






- defroster cover.
- A-pillar panel.
- cowl panel.






- knee bolster with bracket.
Tightening torques: M6 screws = 8 Nm and M8 screws = 20 Nm.
- panel under steering wheel.

Passenger side:






- sun sensor connector.
- screws holding dashboard to A-pillar.

Clamp wiring under dashboard.
- A-pillar panel.
- cowl panel.






- glove compartment.
- soundproofing panels under glove compartment.

Connect battery negative lead.
