Combined instrument panel

When working on the combined instrument panel observe the following:
- Cleanliness at work. Work in an area which is free of dust, oil, solvents, etc.
- Always wash your hands before taking the combined instrument panel apart. Do not use handcream or lotion after washing. It is best to use thin protective cotton gloves.
- Do not touch pointers or dials. Dials are calibrated at the factory and if touched may show false readings.

Two makes of combined instrument panel are in use, VDO and Yazaki.
The difference is most easily apparent from the trip meters.

760/960 1988- only Yazaki used.

Note: If the final digit on the trip meter is red, the speedometer has been changed. This should always be documented in the car Service and Guarantee Book.

- Disconnect battery negative lead.
- Remove soundproofing under panel.
- Remove the two covers and screws retaining panel.
Cut off the lead tie near the air channel in the front right side of panel, 1986 and some 1987 models. Lift the panel out carefully.

- Remove connector seal (made of lead).
- Unplug connectors.

- Reassemble in reverse order.
Install new lead seal.
Reclamp harness near air channel to avoid trapping leads.

- Disconnect battery negative lead.
- Remove trim moldings (1). Avoid damage to surfaces. Take note of screw retaining the longer molding.
- Remove switch panels (2).
- Remove grille from air channel by turning grille up as far as possible and pry out lower pan with the fingers.
- Unscrew casing (3).
- Lift out combined instrument panel. Unplug connectors and lift away the panel.
- Reassemble in reverse order.

- Remove combined Instrument panel mainly as per S3
- One difference is the presence of a central panel, see illustration.
