New driven plates and release bearing introduced on cars with manual gearbox.

Driven plate with nickel-coated hub and phosphated input shaft on manual gearboxes were introduced January 1991, and were fully implemented in production mid-March 1991. A new release bearing, p/n 3549391-5, was introduced on cars with manual gearboxes from the end of January 1991. In general, the changes on hub, input shaft and release bearing were made to keep driven plate surface clear of grease, since this affects clutch function.

Recommendations:

1. Cars built after approx. mid-March 1991* - Use new type of driven plate at repairs, do not add grease on input shaft.

2. Cars built before approx. mid-March 1991* - When replacing the driven plate, use the new type, i.e. nickel-coated.

a) If transmission is equipped with a phosphated input shaft, mostly M47, do not add grease on shaft, just clean it using a brush. Do not use degreasing solvent!

b) If transmission is not equipped with a phosphated input shaft, clean and grease the shaft with a thin layer of high-temperature molybdenum disulfide(MoS2) grease, p/n 1161033-4.

*Note: A phosphated shaft has a black surface; others are steel-gray colored.

The new type of driven plate can be identified not only by reading the part number on the part, but also the hub is brighter due to the nickel coating.

Following are the new driven plate part numbers introduced during model year 1991.

The new release bearing has a sleeve made of plastic material that does not need any grease.

When replacing the bearing, only clean the steel sleeve on the gearbox with a dry cloth and fit the new release bearing.
