Condenser HVAC: Service and Repair

1. Drain A/C system of refrigerant.
2. Disconnect battery ground lead.
3. Remove:
- grille
- cover panel
- upper radiator member.
4. Remove:
- air baffle
- screws securing condenser to radiator (and rubber bushings in some cases)
- air filter air intake
- pressostat connectors
- ambient temperature sensor (1).
5. Jack up car. Remove air baffle between spoiler and radiator.
6. Disconnect condenser.
7. Dry connections internally. Plug all open ends.
8. Apply masking tape to chromed section of bumper to protect chrome.
Caution: Remove condenser by lifting very carefully straight up.
9. Measure quantity of oil remaining in original condenser. New condenser must be tilled with same quantity.
Installation
Refer to R 134A System if replacing condenser with new type with new connections.
10. Transfer foam rubber seals to new condenser.
11. Fill condenser with compressor oil.
NOTE: If original condenser contains no oil, fill new unit per specifications.
12. Transfer pressostats to new condenser. Use new seals.
Tighten pressostats to 3.5 Nm (2.6 ft lb).
13. Transfer rubber bushings on locating pins to bottom of new condenser.
NOTE: In some instances, rubber bushings may also be installed between top of condenser and radiator member.
14. Install and reconnect condenser.
NOTE: Use new O-rings. Coat O-rings with compressor oil.
Torques:
To condenser 25 Nm (18.4 ft lb)
From condenser 20 Nm (14.8 ft lb)
NOTE: After tightening: Coat complete fitting, nut and pipe, as well as inspection hole in nut, liberally with anti-rust agent (PIN 1381065-0).
15. Install air baffle between spoiler and radiator.
16. Install condenser.
NOTE: Ensure that rubber bushings (two) are seated in crossmember when installing condenser.
17. Install screws securing condenser to radiator.
18. Reconnect/install:
- pressostat connectors
- air filter air intake
- air baffles.
19. Install:
- cover panel
- upper radiator member.
20. Check operation of hood catch.
21. Fill A/C system with refrigerant.
22. Reconnect battery ground lead.
23. Test for leaks with leak detector 951 1207.
24. Remove masking tape from bumper.
25. Install grille.
