Connection

Connection of Volvo Scan Tool (ST)
Volvo ST must be connected to both VIDA PC and vehicle to DLC in passenger compartment (models 1996-) or DLC B (models -1995).





Is Volvo ST connected and switched ON?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - No Fault Found

- Ignition on.
- Power up the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).




- Check that the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) display lights.

Does the display light?

Yes - Checking control module ground terminal

No - Checking Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

- Fault-trace Volvo Scan Tool (ST), supply voltage and data link connector (DLC) ground.

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect control module.
Connect an ohmmeter between control module connector terminal 3S and ground terminal 31/51.









The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

OK - Checking the control module power supply

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition off.








- Check cable between control module connector terminal 3S and ground terminal 31/51 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.





Continue - Verification

Checking the control module power supply








- Ignition off.
- Control module disconnected.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between control module terminal 3S and terminal 1S.









The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking communication cable to data link connector (DLC)

Not OK - Checking fuse

Check that fuse 11/28 is intact.





Is the fuse intact?

Yes - Checking 15-supply to fuse

No - Checking for a short-circuit

- Ignition off.
Check cable between:




- fuse 11/28 and switch connector terminal 2
- fuse 11/28 and control module connector terminal 1S
- fuse 11/28 and control module connector terminal 9T
- vacuum pump connector terminal 3 and control module connector terminal 7T
- control module connector terminal 3S and ground terminal 31/51
- switch connector terminal 5 and control module connector terminal 4T
- switch connector terminal 4 and control module connector terminal 8T
- switch connector terminal 3 and control module connector terminal 6T
for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between the front socket of the fuse holder for fuse 11/28 and ground.









The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking for an open-circuit

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition off.








- Check cable between fuse 11/28 and control module connector terminal 1S for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Check circuit before fuse 11/28 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault. For further information about the circuit before the fuse, see Wiring Diagram.

Checking communication cable to data link connector (DLC)








- Ignition off.
- Connect control module.
- Ignition on.
Connect an electrician's screwdriver (bulb at least 3 W) between data link connector (DLC) terminal B2 (1996- terminal 13) and ground.




- The bulb should not light.

Does the bulb light?

Yes - Checking for a short-circuit

No - Checking the communication cable

- Ignition off.








- Check cable between data link connector (DLC) terminal B2 (1996- terminal 13) and ground for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Checking the communication cable








- Ignition off.
- Disconnect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect control module.
Connect an ohmmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminal B2 (1996- terminal 13) and control module connector terminal 4S.









The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

OK - Checking control module communication

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition off.








- Check cable between data link connector (DLC) terminal B2 (1996- terminal 13) and control module connector terminal 4S for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition off.
- Connect control module.
- Ignition on.




- Power up the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Try to establish communication with the cruise control control module.

Is communication established?

Yes - Checking for contact resistance and oxidation

No - Checking Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

- Ignition off.
- The cause of the fault has been loose connections in the data link connector (DLC) or control module connectors. Check connectors for contact resistance and oxidation and remedy in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and loose connections according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows.












- Ignition off.
- Reconnect connectors, reinstall components.
- Connect control module.
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to data link connector (DLC).
- Ignition on.




- Try to establish communication with the cruise control control module.

Is communication established?

Yes - VERIFIED

No - VERIFICATION FAILED

Connection of Volvo ST




- Ignition off.
- Insert blue memory cassette into Volvo ST.
- Connect adapter 951 1457-5 to cable 951 1458-3.
- Connect VIDA communication lead between the adapter and the VIDA PC.

Is the data link connector (DLC) located in passenger compartment?

Yes - Connection to DLC

No - Connection to DLC

Connection to DLC
- Connect Volvo ST cable (p/n 951 1458-3) to the adapter (p/n 951 1459-1) for use in the engine compartment.
- Connect the adapter to DLC A or B, see DLC DLC.
- Connect the adapter supply lead to battery.
- Switch on Volvo ST.

- Connect Volvo ST cable (p/n 951 1458-3) to the DLC in passenger compartment.
- Switch on Volvo ST.
