Note! Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 1-2-2 will always be stored if the engine is turned off after a test drive. The test drive must then be carried out again. If cruise control disengages at speeds above 35 km/h, without the ON/OFF switch, brake or clutch pedal being activated, or gear selector being moved from D to N, discontinue test driving. Fault-trace according to "Reading input and output signals" (diagnostic test mode (DTM) 5).




- Ignition off.
- Disconnect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from data link connector (DLC).

Checking cruise control components/disengagement causes

Note! Drive the car at a speed greater than 35 km/h (for at least 15 seconds) and check that the following components and disengagement causes are operating. Note any deviations.

- Check that speedometer is operating correctly.
- Switch cruise control switch to ON. Activate cruise control by pressing the SET+ button. The cruise control should maintain the set speed.
- Keep the SET+ button pressed. The car speed should increase.
- Switch the cruise control switch OFF. Cruise control should disengage.
- Switch the switch to RESUME. The cruise control should return to the previously set speed.
- Press the SET- button so that the car speed is below 35 km/h. Cruise control should disengage.
- Activate cruise control. Lightly depress brake pedal. Cruise control should disengage.
- Activate cruise control. Lightly depress clutch pedal (manual transmission). Cruise control should disengage.
- Activate cruise control. Move gear selector from D to N (automatic transmission). Cruise control should disengage.

Checking disengagement cause
Activate Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 5.




- Read off and note disengagement cause
- Continue by fault-tracing the disengagement cause that has been stored.
- Following alternatives:
1. Response code 1-1-4 stored.
2. Response code 1-4-1 stored.
3. Response code 4-1-1 stored.
4. Response code 1-2-4 stored.
5. Response code 2-1-4 stored.

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the control unit.
- Raise the car so that the front wheels hang free.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between control unit connector pin 8S and ground.
Then slowly spin the front RH wheel by hand.
The voltmeter should vary between battery voltage and approx. 0.4 V when the wheel is spun.
- 1. the value is OK.
- 2. the voltmeter displays a constant battery voltage.
- 3. the voltmeter displays approx. 0 V continuously.

- Ignition off.
- The cause of the trouble code is poor contact in the control unit connector. Check control unit connector pin 8S for contact resistance and oxidation as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault , and for a loose contact as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.

Connecting test box to dashboard






Is the test box connected to the dashboard?

Yes - Checking the component

No - Connecting test box

- Ignition off.
- Expose dashboard as per.
- Undo dashboard connector.
Connecting test box to dashboard:
- Connect test box to dashboard connector A and B.

Connect test box to dashboard connector A and B. Test as per. VDO signal table, column # 4

Checking ground points




- Ignition off.
- Switch off anything which might drain the battery.








- Connect an ohmmeter between:
- # 15 (# A15) on test box and battery - terminal.
- # 17 (# A17) on test box and battery + terminal.

Ohmmeter should read 0 ohms both times.

OK - Checking the component

OK - Go back to fault-tracing where you left off.

Not OK - Check ground points 31/50 and 31/51 on the electrical control panel and leads connecting to them for open-circuit as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and contact resistance as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Check ground lead between electrical control panel and chassis for open-circuit as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and contact resistance as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Check ground points 31/50 and 31/51 on the electrical control panel and leads connecting to them for open-circuit as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and contact resistance as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
- Check ground lead between electrical control panel and chassis for open-circuit as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and contact resistance as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.





Press Continue when fault is repaired.

- Connect a mains tester with at least 3 W between control unit connector pin 8S and ground.





Does the mains tester lamp light?

Yes - Checking for a short circuit

- Check the wire between control unit connection 8S and combined instrument connection A7 as well as the wire between engine control module connection B18 and combined instrument connection A7 for a short circuit to voltage supply as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition off.








- Check the wire between combined instrument connection A7 and 53-pin connector pin 24/13 for an open circuit as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Access the combined instrument as described in.




- Connect an ohmmeter between control unit connection 8S and combined instrument connection A:7.

The resistance should be 0 ohms

OK - Checking for a short circuit

Not OK - Checking for an open circuit

- Check the wire between control unit connection 8S and combined instrument connection A7 as well as the wire between engine control module connection B18 and combined instrument connection A7 for a short circuit to ground as described in Checking wiring and terminals. Checking Park/Neutral position (PNP) switch





Connection

Connection of Volvo Scan Tool (ST)
Volvo ST must be connected to both VIDA PC and vehicle to DLC in passenger compartment (models 1996-) or DLC B (models -1995).





Is Volvo ST connected and switched ON?

Yes - Checking response code

No - No Fault Found

- Ignition on.




- Activate Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 2.
- ON/OFF selector switch to the ON position.
- Move gear shift from D to N or from N to D.
- Check that the stop (brake) light switch is OK by checking that response code 2-2-3 is returned.

Response code 2-2-3 returned?
- 1. Yes, response code 2-2-3 is returned.
- 2. No, response code 2-2-3 is not returned.
- 3. No, response code 3-1-1 is returned instead.

Checking response code 3-1-1
A response code is returned when the control module receives several input signals from the same component or circuit within 8 ms. The cause of the fault can be loose connections or a defective system component.

- Check that the car can be started with the gear selector in positions N and P.
- Check that the car cannot be started with the gear shift in other positions.

- Disconnect control module.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between control module connector terminal 3T and ground.









Voltmeter should read battery voltage with the gear selector in the D-position and 0 V with the gear selector in the N- and P- positions.
