Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Connecting the Breakout Box

Connecting test box to connector A (black)

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect engine control module (ECM).

NOTE: The engine control module (ECM) must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.

- Connect adapter 951 1351 into engine control module (ECM) connector and connect test box 981 3190 to adapter.

- Select "Continue".

If reading is OK:
^ Continue with Checking Ground Terminals section below.

Checking Ground Terminals

- Ignition off.
- Turn of all equipment in the car that takes power from the battery such as interior lighting and radio

- Connect an ohmmeter between battery negative terminal and:

#13 (#A13) on test box
#28 (#A28) on test box
#42 (#A42) on test box

- The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms for all readings.

If reading is OK:
^ Return to fault-tracing procedure.

If reading is incorrect:
^ Check ground terminals 31/32 and 31/33 at rear of engine and their cables for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Check ground lead between engine and chassis for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation.

Connection Of Test Box To Connector B (gray)

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect engine control module (ECM).

NOTE: The engine control module (ECM) must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.

- Connect adapter 951 1351 into engine control module (ECM) connector and connect test box 981 3190 to adapter.

- Will the engine control module (ECM) be connected when readings are taken on connector B?

Yes:
^ Proceed to Checking ground terminal #B28 section below.

No:
^ Return to fault-tracing procedure.

Checking ground terminal #B28

- Ignition off.
- Turn of all equipment in the car that takes power from the battery such as interior lighting and radio.
- Connect engine control module (ECM).
- Use ohmmeter to measure resistance between #28 (#B28) on test box and battery negative terminal.

The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

If reading is OK:
^ return to fault-tracing procedure.

If reading is incorrect:
^ Check ground terminals 31/32 and 31/33 on the engine and their cables for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation.
