Checking The Fuel Pump (FP)

Checking the fuel pump (FP)

Fuel pump (FP)

- Ignition off.
- Remove fuse 1.
- Ignition on.
- Lightly squeeze the hose connected to the fuel pressure regulator and reinstall fuse 1.
- Check that the fuel pump works for a few seconds after the fuse is refitted. When the fuel pump (FP) is operating the fuel hose connected to the fuel pressure regulator pulses.
Note! If the pump does not work at the first attempt, repeat the process a couple of times to verify that the pump does not work.

Does the fuel pump (FP) work?

Yes - Checking ignition spark GA15.
No Fault Found

No - Starting fuel pump (FP)

-------------------------------------------------

Starting fuel pump (FP)

- Ignition off.
- Remove central electrical unit cover.
- Remove the fuel pump (FP) relay (pos. 103 in the electrical distribution unit).
- Ignition on.

- Connect a cable between relay base terminals 1 and 3.

The fuel pump should start.

OK - Fault-tracing information

Not OK - Checking the power supply to the relay

-------------------------------------------------

Fault-tracing information
- The fuel pump (FP) is OK. Fault-trace the fuel pump (FP) relay.

Continue - No Fault Found

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the power supply to the relay

- Ignition on.
- Fuel pump (FP) relay removed.

- Connect a voltmeter between relay base terminal 1 and ground.

The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking fuel pump (FP) ground lead

Not OK - Check fuse 2. Replace fuse if necessary. Check cable between fuel pump (FP) relay terminal 1 and fuse 2 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault
Replacing component

-------------------------------------------------

Replacing component
- Check fuse 2. Replace fuse if necessary.

Was the fuse OK?

Yes - Checking for an open-circuit

No - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking for an open-circuit

- Check cable between fuel pump (FP) relay terminal 1 and fuse 2 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking fuel pump (FP) ground lead

- Ignition off.
- Open 2-pin fuel pump (FP) connector (C/BA) in the cargo compartment.

- Connect an ohmmeter between fuel pump (FP) connector terminal 2 and (fuel pump (FP) relay side) and ground.

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

OK - Checking the fuel pump (FP)

Not OK - Checking fuel pump (FP) ground terminal

-------------------------------------------------

Checking fuel pump (FP) ground terminal

- Ignition off.
- Fuel pump (FP) disconnected (connector C/BA).
- Check fuel pump (FP) ground terminal (31/48) for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault

- Connect an ohmmeter between fuel pump (FP) connector terminal 2 and (fuel pump (FP) relay side) and ground.

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

OK - The cause of the fault has been loose connections in the fuel pump (FP) ground terminal.
