Background:

This service bulletin is a supplement to section 6, 7 (65, 72-77) 850 1992-, in the service manual.

This services bulletin covers:

1. Rear springs/shock absorbers, replacement.

Special tools: 951 2050, 999 5498, 999 5499, 999 5500, 999 5501

Note!
For the removal of the springs alone, proceed from step 4.

Preparation, shock absorber

Remove:

- the rear seat. See other manual: Rear seal Sect. 8(82-86, 88), Convertible C70 exterior equipment, TP8208201.

- 4 screws on the loudspeaker. Loosen the loudspeaker

- the 3 screws on the dividing filter and press out the clip on the connector. Remove the wires and the dividing filter through the loudspeaker opening.

Tools for upper shock absorber mounting

Use socket 999 5498 and ratchet wrench 999 5499 for standard shock absorbers. For Nivomat shock absorber, use socket 999 5500 and ratchet wrench 999 5501.

Removal, upper shock absorber mounting

Remove:

- the shock absorber upper mounting nut.

Check the mounting bush for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.

Removal, lower shock absorber mounting

Jack up the car.

Use a trolley jack to force up the supporting arm so that the shock absorber is not under load. Position it against the recess for the spring fixing screw.

Remove:

- the shock absorber lower mounting screw.

- the shock absorber from the axle spindle.

Note!
For the replacement of the springs alone, proceed to 5.

Replace the shock absorber.

Note!
For the installation of the shock absorbers alone, proceed to 7 - 10.

Removal, springs

Remove:

- the nut from the lower holder

- the spring from the car.

Transfer the rubber spacer, the auxiliary spring and the lower holder to the new spring.

Note!
For the installation of the springs alone, refer to 6.

Installation, springs

Install:

- the new spring

- a new nut on the lower holder.

Position the end of the spring in the spring holder on the supporting arm and put the lower holder thread through the opening in the supporting arm.

Tighten the nut on the washer to 40 Nm (30 ft-lb).

Note!
For the installation of the springs alone proceed from 8.

Installation, upper shock absorber mounting

Note!
Two people are required to install the upper shock absorber mounting.

Insert the new shock absorber up through the upper mounting and install the nut.

Note!
Before tightening the nut, install the lower shock absorber mounting.

Installation, lower shock absorber mounting

Place a trolley jack under the supporting arm and jack it up.

Note!
Check that the spring is sitting correctly in the upper spring seat.

Install:

- the screw on the shock absorber and tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft-lb).

Remove the trolley jack and lower the car.

Tighten the nut:

- for the standard shock absorber tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft-lb)

- for the Nivomal shock absorber and M12 nut tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft-lb).

- for the Nivomat shock absorber and M10 nut tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft-lb) and tighten to an angle of 90°.

Use the same tools as used for 2 and angle gauge 951 2050.

Final work on the shock absorber

Install:

- the 3 screws on the dividing filter and press in the clip to the connector.

- the loudspeaker and the 4 screws.

- the rear seat. See other manual: Rear seat Sect. 8(82-86, 88), Convertible C70 exterior equipment.
