AA. Checking For Leaks In the Middle Seal Ring on Gearbox
Performance test AA A1Note!
Before calling Volvo Tech Hot Line: 1-800-500-5570, all fault tracing must have been performed, check sheet filled out and pressure readings taken as per AB C1 - AB C3
- Perform test when the transmission is cold.
Move the gear selector from D to R 2-4 times, waiting at least 3 seconds in D for each D to R application. If engagement is very hard a new transmission must be installed.
Note!
When repeating the D-R shift one must wait at least 3 sec in D-position to give the C2 clutch accumulator time to empty its chamber. This is necessary to avoid an incorrect diagnose. A very quick movement, D-R-D-R normally gives hard R-engagement, even with a normal operating transmission.
Is the engagement very hard?
Yes:

No:
^ Step: AA A2
Performance test continued AA A2
Move the gear selector from R to D and apply slight throttle.
If the vehicle only moves slowly with high rpm. as starting in "winter" mode, and then bangs into the gear, the rear transmission cover must be replaced according to this service bulletin.
Is the vehicle moving slowly with high rpm?
Yes:
^ Step: AA A7
No:
^ Step: AA A3
Performance test warm transmission AA A3
- Drive the vehicle so that the transmission reaches normal operating temperature, approx 100°C (212°F).
In workshop
Check oil temperature by using VST and test mode 5. The test can take up to 20 sec to be performed.
- Ignition on.
- Check the transmission oil temperature by using Diagnostic Test Mode 5. The test will take up to 20 sec.
Move the gear lever from D to R 2-4 times. If the engagement is very hard the seal ring is worn.
Note!

Replacement of the complete rear cover including seal rings AA A4
- Replace the complete rear cover including seal rings, as per Accumulator pistons/sealing rings B2/C2, replacement.

Then continue with:
^ Step: AA A6
Checking leakage of the center seal ring, warm transmission AA A5
If the engagement from R to D is too hard, pressure readings for C1 clutch and C2 clutch must be performed as per AB C1 - AB C3.
Then continue with:
^ Step: AAA6
Test driving AA A6
After the rear cover of the transmission has been replaced test drive the vehicle and verify that the transmission is operating normally.
Note!
All traffic signs and all posted speed limits.

- Replace transmission. as per Transmission/torque converter, replacement.
