Cleaning and inspection

Switching components




Remove oil pipe and hose from transmission
Rinse pipe and hose with Dexron II E/Ford-Mercon ATF oil.
Install oil pipe on the new transmission
Place a new O-ring on the quick-coupling.
Check that the threaded plate and torque control arm guide sleeve are in position on the transmission cover.

Flush




Flush oil cooler with Dexron IIE/Ford-Mercon ATF automatic transmission fluid. Install a hose to the upper oil cooler connection.
Place a container beneath the return hose. Flush with Dexron IIE/Ford-Mercon ATF automatic transmission fluid.

Checking carrier plate




Make sure carrier plate is not damaged or cracked

Check:
- that mating surfaces between the transmission and engine are clean, and that guide bushings are intact and in position.
- That the torque converter bushing in the crankshaft is intact.

Checking/replacing torque converter




- Ensure that torque converter cover mating surfaces are clean.
- Apply a light coating of grease to torque converter guide studs and in the holes for the guide bushings on the torque converter cover.
- Ensure that torque converter is as far into the transmission as possible. Check with a ruler. The distance between the cover and retaining tabs should be approximately 14 mm.
