Cars with SRS (Air bag)/SIPS-bag (850)

Warning! Exercise extra care when carrying out repair work on cars equipped with SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)/SIPS. This is to help prevent: 1. Personal injury during the repair work. 2. Damage or function impairment in the SRS/SIPS systems. Any work on the SRS/SIPS systems or related components in the car which could effect the SRS/SIPS systems must be carried out by an authorized Volvo workshop.

Is the car equipped with SRS/SIPS?
If the car has the letters SRS on the steering wheel pad then it is equipped with an SRS system. Cars equipped with a passenger SRS Airbag have the letters SRS embossed on the dashboard above the glove box on the passenger side.
Cars with SRS were also equipped with pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners in the B posts from 1993 onwards.
SIPS bags are only installed on SRS cars from 1995 onward. There are SIPS labels on the windshield and on the seat storage compartment to indicate the car is equipped with this system.

Dashboard or around steering column covers.
SRS cables around the soundproofing panel, ignition switch, steering column covers, glove compartment, dashboard, door sills and B posts are all vulnerable to damage from being clamped, rubbing or damage from screws penetrating the wiring when working in these areas.

Center console
The SRS collision sensor is located between the parking brake and the gear selector lever in the center console.
Never install accessories near the sensor.
The collision sensor connector on 1992 models must never be disconnected.

Steering and front end work
Certain types of operation in the vicinity of the steering wheel, steering column or steering gear require that the work is carried out following the methods described.
Read the appropriate section! Turning the steering wheel more than three turns in either direction will damage the contact reel in the steering column.

Seats
The SIPS bag sensor is located in the front section of the seat storage bin.
The SIPS bag can be activated by an accidental blow or pressure on the seat bin or if an object is caught between the seat bin and the door when it is closed.

Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC)
1995: use data link connector (DLC) B in engine compartment.
1996-: Data link connector (DLC) in passenger compartment.
