Condition

Knocking and rasping is primarily caused by how engine torque changes when gear changing. This is controlled by the engine control module (ECM). The transmission is a passive component which (together with the engine / chassis mountings) absorbs torque from the engine.

Possible source
- Defective engine control module (ECM).

Fault symptom[s]
- It is hard to drive the car smoothly in low gears at slow speeds
- The car jumps when parking
- Metallic knocking sound from the transmission when changing gears under load
- There seems to be a lot of play in the transmission.
