WARNING! Make sure the battery is disconnected before disconnecting or connecting the ignition wire.
Turn the ignition key to position I to unlock the steering lock.
CDA3. Loosen The Steering Wheel Screws
Loosen the two screws (Torx 30) at the back of the steering wheel. Do not remove the screws, leave them in the recesses of the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel to get to the screws.
CDA4. Removal of steering wheel airbag module
Disconnect the connector and lift the steering wheel air bag module out.
WARNING! Never use an ohmmeter or any other charged measuring instrument on a disconnected, unreleased airbag module. There is a risk that the module could be released! Also,do not disassemble or repair the steering wheel airbag module or install it in another vehicle.
CDA5. Positioning the steering wheel airbag module
CAUTION! When the unreleased steering wheel airbag module is removed, position the module metal-side down (i.e. the back) in a place where it will be protected from careless handling.
CDA6. Connecting the special tools
Connect special tool 998 8695 to the steering wheel airbag module connector. This enables the car to be driven without the SRS diagnosis system registering a diagnostic trouble code.
HINT: If the ignition is switched on when neither the steering wheel airbag module nor the special tool is connected, a diagnostic trouble code registering an open circuit will appear. Erase any diagnostic trouble code.
CDA7. Loosening the retaining screw in the centre of the steering wheel
Loosen the screw but do not remove it. The screw should be loose enough to turn with your fingers.
CDA8. Connecting the battery negative lead
CDA9. Aligning the front wheels
Drive the car slowly in a straight line forwards or backwards on a level surface so that the wheels are directly in line with the car lengthways.
CAUTION! It is imperative that the front wheels are directly in line with the car lengthways if the steering wheel and/or the contact reel need to be removed to do work.
WARNING! Do not drive the car further than necessary when aligning the front wheels. The steering wheel is not secured and the steering wheel air bag module is removed.
CDA10. Disconnecting the battery negative lead
Ignition off.
CDA11. Removal of the special tools
Remove the special tool 998 8695.
CDA12. Securing the contact reel
Remove the screw from parking position (A) and secure the contact reel in lock position (B). Move the plastic tape with the screw.
CAUTION! Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked or the pin on the will break.
CDA13. Removal of the retaining screw in the centre of the steering wheel
CDA14. Removal of steering wheel, steering column cover and selector
CAUTION! Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked or the pin on the contact reel will break.
Carefully lift the steering wheel out without turning it. Allow the wire and the plastic tape to pass through the opening in the steering wheel.
Remove:
3 screws, Torx 20, from the steering column cover
2 screws, Torx 20, from each selector.
CDA15. Removal of contact reel/SRS
Remove:
the steering column cover and selector according to CDA14
3 screws on the contact reel/SRS
the connector from the contact reel.
Assembly
CDA16. Resetting the contact reel to zero
If the locking screw is not in the lock position as shown in the figure, reset the contact reel to zero. For resetting to zero Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable
NOTE: The new contact reel is reset to zero when locking screws are positioned in the lock position. Resetting to zero ensures that all electrical functions on the steering column operate and damage to the contact reel does not occur.
CDA17. Installation of contact reel/SRS
Install:
The contact reel/SRS
3 screws on the contact reel/SRS. Tighten the screws on the contact reel to 2.5 Nm (1.9 ft-lb). Make sure that no wires are trapped
The connector
apply to the contact rail to ensure a good contact.
CDA18. Installation of selector, steering column cover and steering wheel.
Install:
2 screws, Torx 20, on each selector
3 screws, Torx 20, on the steering column cover.
CAUTION! Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked or the pin on the contact reel will break.
Put the wires and the plastic tape through the opening in the steering wheel and then install the steering wheel without turning it.
CAUTION! When installing the steering wheel put it in the correct position in relation to the direction the wheels are facing.
If the steering wheel is not in the correct position, do not turn it when it is on the steering column. Carefully remove the steering wheel and try again.
CDA19. Installing the retaining screw in the centre of the steering wheel.
CAUTION! Tighten the screw finger tight only. Do not use any tools.
CDA20. Unlocking the contact reel
Remove the screw from locking position (B) and install it in parking position (A). Move the plastic tape with the screw. The contact reel is now unlocked and the steering wheel can be turned.
CDA21. Connecting the special tool
Connect the special tool 998 8695.
CDA22. Connecting the battery negative lead
CDA23. Alignment of front wheels
Drive the car slowly in a straight line forwards or backwards on a level circuit so that the wheels are directly in line with the car lengthways.
Carefully check that the steering wheel can be turned a full turn in both directions and make sure that all electrical functions on the steering column operate correctly.
WARNING! Do not drive the car further than necessary when aligning the front wheels. The steering wheel is not secured and the steering wheel air bag module is removed.
If the steering wheel is Incorrectly aligned:
See CDA10 - CDA15, CDA16 - CDA23.

Replacing the screws on the steering wheel
Attach the airbag module with the 2 screws, Torx 30, in the recesses of the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel to get to the screws. Torque setting = 10 Nm (7.5 ft-lb).
CAUTION! Tighten the upper screw first. This ensures the horn operates.
Final Work
CDA26. SRS airbag date label
NOTE: Do not forget to replace the airbag date label on the driver's side B pillar with a new label.
The date label is supplied with the new steering wheel airbag module.
CDA27. Final check
WARNING! Before connecting the battery make sure that nobody is inside the car.
After Installing all the parts, do the following:
Turn the ignition key to position II
Connect the battery negative lead.
Check that:
The steering wheel turns easily
The horn works by pressing on all four corners of the steering wheel airbag module.
NOTE: Check that the SRS warning lamp is not broken by turning the ignition key to position II. The SRS warning lamp should come on and then go off after approximately 3 seconds.
Check that the SRS warning lamp in the combination instrument does not remain on. If the lamp remains on, use Volvo Aftersales Diagnostic and Information System (VADIS) and symptom entry or Volvo System Tester (VST) to find the diagnostic trouble codes.
