Front Steering Knuckle - Installation

INSTALLATION

1. Wipe the halfshaft outer C/V joint-to-knuckle mating surface clean (1) and apply a light coating of Mopar(R) Wheel Bearing Grease or Mopar(R) Multi-Purpose Grease around the circumference of that flat surface. Do not apply too much grease or allow it to come in contact with the ABS tone wheel.
2. Wipe the rear of the hub and bearing in the knuckle clean where they contact the C/V joint.

3. Slide the hub of the knuckle (4) onto the splines of the halfshaft outer C/V joint (3).

4. Install the knuckle (1) onto the ball joint stud (3) aligning the bolt hole in the knuckle boss with the notch formed into the side of the ball joint stud.
5. Install a new ball joint stud pinch bolt (4) and nut (2). Tighten the nut to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).

CAUTION: The strut assembly-to-knuckle attaching bolts (2) are serrated and must not be turned during installation. Install the nuts while holding the bolts stationary in the steering knuckle. Refer to the following step.

6. Position the lower end of the strut assembly (1) in line with the upper end of the knuckle (4), aligning the mounting holes. Install the two attaching bolts (2) from the front of the vehicle.
7. Install the nuts (5). While holding the bolts (2) in place, tighten the nuts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).

8. Place the tie rod heat shield (4) on the knuckle arm (3) so that the shield is positioned straight away from the steering gear and tie rod end once installed. Align the hole in the shield with the tie rod end mounting hole.
9. Install the outer tie rod (1) ball stud into the hole in the knuckle arm (3). Start the tie rod mounting nut (2) onto the stud. While holding the tie rod end stud with a wrench, tighten the nut with a wrench or crowfoot wrench. Tighten the nut to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).

10. Install the wheel speed sensor (1) with heat shield (2) on the knuckle (4). Install the mounting screw (5) and tighten it to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.).
11. Install the brake rotor, disc brake caliper and adapter. Brake Rotor - Installation

12. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the halfshaft outer C/V joint (5).
13. Install the washer (6) and hub nut (3) on the end of the halfshaft (5) and snug it.
14. While a helper applies the brakes to keep the hub (4) from rotating, tighten the hub nut (3) to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.).
15. Install the spring washer (3), and lock nut (7) over the hub nut. Insert the cotter pin (1) through the notches in the lock nut and hole in halfshaft.

16. Wrap the cotter pin (1) ends tightly around the lock nut (2).

17. Install tire and wheel assembly (1) Tires and Wheels - Installation. Install and tighten wheel mounting nuts (3) to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
18. Lower the vehicle.
19. Perform wheel alignment as necessary. Service and Repair
