Pinpoint Test AA: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the powertrain malfunction (wrench) status from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) and transmission status (4R70E/4R75E transmission), the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for the transmission status (6R80 transmission) and from the 4X4 control module for the Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system status the over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus.

When a fault condition exists in the ETC system or in the transmission (4R70E/4R75E transmission), the PCM provides the IC with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. When a fault condition exists in the transmission (6R80 transmission), the TCM provides the IC with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. When a fault condition exists in the 4WD system, the 4X4 control module provides the IC with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

If the ETC, transmission, or 4WD message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IC defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator to the last on/off state, based upon the last known good message received.

If the ETC or transmission (4R70E/4R75E transmission) message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0100 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

If the transmission message (6R80 transmission) is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0101 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

If the 4WD message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0102 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator on.

NOTE: If U0100 is set in the IC other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge. If DTC U101 is set, other symptoms may include the Overdrive (O/D) off indicator ON. If DTC U102 is set, other symptoms may include the 4x4, 4x4 LOW or 4X4 AUTO message center indicators may be inoperative.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC concern
- Transmission concern
- 4WD concern
- Message center concern
