Steering Column
Removal and Installation
All vehicles
1. Remove the steering column shrouds. For additional information, refer to Steering Column Shroud Steering Column Shroud.
2. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to Steering Wheel Service and Repair.
3. Remove and discard the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
4. NOTE: Vehicles with manual transmissions are not equipped with a brake shift interlock solenoid and have a plastic housing that retains the electrical connector.
Disconnect the following electrical connectors.
- Clockspring
- Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transceiver
- Ignition switch
- Multifunction switch
- Brake shift interlock solenoid
Vehicles with column shift
5. Disconnect the overdrive cancel switch electrical connector.
6. Detach the transmission selector lever cable from the steering column and the bracket.
- Detach the transmission selector lever cable pin-type retainer.
All vehicles
7. Detach the wiring harness retainers from the steering column and position the wiring harness aside.
8. Detach the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
9. Remove the 4 nuts and the steering column.
- Discard the nuts.
- To install, tighten the new nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
10. NOTICE: Make sure that the steering column support is flush with the instrument panel before tightening the nuts or damage to the steering column may occur.
NOTICE: Make sure the electrical wiring harness is routed correctly and secured to the steering column or damage to the wires and/or connectors may occur.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
