Pinpoint Test I: The Rain Sensitive Wipers Do Not Operate

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 81, Wipers and Washers for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

When the multifunction switch is in 1 of the 5 intermittent settings and the rain sensor detects moisture on the shield, the rain sensor will send a serial data signal to the wiper motor through circuit VRW06 (GN/WH) to activate the wipers. Voltage is supplied to the rain sensor from Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 43 (10A), through circuit CBP43 (GY) and ground through circuit GD133 (BK). When an inoperative condition exists in the rain sensitive wiper system, the rain sensitive wiper system will default to an intermittent wiper system.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Rain sensor mounting bracket not secured to the windshield
- Wiper blades
- Multifunction switch
- Rain sensor
- Wiper motor

PINPOINT TEST I: THE RAIN SENSITIVE WIPERS DO NOT OPERATE

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
I1 CHECK THE RAIN SENSITIVE WIPERS FOR INTERMITTENT OPERATION

- Ignition ON.

- NOTE: When an inoperative condition exists in the rain sensitive wiper system, the rain sensitive wiper system will default to an intermittent wiper system.

- NOTE: Make sure the windshield is dry when carrying out this step.

- NOTE: The wipers will make a single wipe of the windshield when the multifunction switch is initially set to 1 of the 5 intermittent settings. This single wipe should not be considered part of an intermittent wiper operation.

- Turn the multifunction switch to 1 of the 5 intermittent settings.
- Do the wipers operate intermittently?

Yes
GO to I3.

No
GO to I2.

-------------------------------------------------
I2 CHECK THE RAIN SENSITIVE WIPERS OPERATION

NOTE: The multifunction switch and circuits are identical for rain sensitive and intermittent wiper systems.

- Turn the multifunction switch to each of the 5 intermittent settings while applying water on the windshield above the rain sensor.
- Do the wipers operate in all intermittent positions?

Yes
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test F Pinpoint Test F: The Intermittent Wiper Speed Does Not Operate Correctly - Windshield. CHECK specifically for intermittent multifunction switch operation and/or associated wiring problems.

-------------------------------------------------
I3 CHECK CIRCUIT CBP43 (GY) FOR VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Rain Sensor Module C914 .
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between rain sensor module C914-4, circuit CBP43 (GY), harness side and ground.

- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
GO to I4.

No
VERIFY SJB fuse 43 (10A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit(s). TEST the system for normal operation.

If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. Diagrams By Number

-------------------------------------------------
I4 CHECK CIRCUIT GD133 (BK) FOR AN OPEN

- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between rain sensor module C914-1, circuit GD133 (BK), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to I5.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
I5 CHECK CIRCUIT VRW06 (GN/WH) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between rain sensor module C914-2, circuit VRW06 (GN/WH), harness side and ground.

- Is any voltage present?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to I6.

-------------------------------------------------
I6 CHECK CIRCUIT VRW06 (GN/WH) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Wiper Motor C125 .
- Measure the resistance between wiper motor C125-4, circuit VRW06 (GN/WH), harness side and rain sensor C914-2, circuit VRW06 (GN/WH), harness side; and between wiper motor C125-4, circuit VRW06 (GN/WH), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the wiper motor and the rain sensor; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the wiper motor and ground?

Yes
INSTALL a new rain sensor. REFER to Rain Sensor Rain Sensor. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
