Driver Air Bag Module
Driver Air Bag Module
Removal
WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition is ON.
NOTE: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
1. Depower the SRS. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.
2. NOTE: The bottom, LH and RH wire clip access hole locations are shown.
NOTE: The attachment pin at the bottom of the steering wheel must be released from the wire clip before the LH and RH side.
Starting with the wire clip at the bottom of the steering wheel, release the attachment pin from the wire clip.
- Insert a 3-mm hex key or a suitable tool through the access hole, position the tool against the wire clip to disengage the attachment pin.
- Push the wire clip inward and pull the driver air bag module away from the steering wheel.
- Repeat for the 2 attachment pins on the LH and RH side of the steering wheel.
3. Remove the driver air bag module.
- Compress the tabs and disconnect the 2 driver air bag module electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the horn electrical connector.
- Remove the driver air bag module.
Installation
WARNING: Prior to reinstalling a previously removed driver air bag module, make sure to correctly position the wire clip that retains the driver air bag module to the steering wheel. Failure to follow this instruction will result in incorrect installation of the driver air bag module and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
1. Connect the driver air bag module and horn electrical connectors.
2. Align the 3 attachment pins to the wire clip openings in the steering wheel and position the driver air bag module in place.
3. With the attachment pins aligned, push inward to seat the driver air bag module.
4. Pull firmly on the driver air bag module corners to make sure that the attachment pins are completely engaged.
5. Repower the SRS. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.
