Pinpoint Test AJ: DTC U0184 Or DTC U0184:00
Normal Operation
Some audio system modules receive network messages from the Audio Control Module (ACM) via the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN).
For early build vehicles with satellite radio and SYNC(R), there are 2 receivers for the ACM message. For all other configurations, there is only one receiver.
- DTC U0184 (Lost Communication With Radio ( ACM)) - set by the Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) module when network messages are missing from the ACM for more than 5 seconds with the ignition in RUN.
- DTC U0184:00 (Lost Communication With Radio: No Sub Type Information) - set by the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) when network messages are missing from the ACM for more than 5 seconds with the ignition in RUN.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Communication network concern
- Audio system concern
- ACM
PINPOINT TEST AJ: DTC U0184 OR DTC U0184:00
-------------------------------------------------
AJ1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN
NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out.
- Operate the audio system in various modes (AM/FM tuner, satellite radio, SYNC, etc.) and observe the operation.
- Is an observable symptom present?
Yes
GO to AJ2.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to an intermittent fault in the network wiring. CHECK the network wiring.
-------------------------------------------------
AJ2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK
- Ignition ON.
- Carry out the network test using the scan tool.
- Does the ACM pass the network test?
Yes
GO to AJ3.
No
REFER to Module Communications Network Testing and Inspection.
-------------------------------------------------
AJ3 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE OUT-OF-RANGE DTCs
- Carry out the self-test for the following modules:
- ACM
- APIM (if equipped)
- SDARS (if equipped)
- Are any voltage out-of-range DTCs recorded in any module?
Yes
REFER to DTC Charts. Information and Entertainment Systems
No
GO to AJ4.
-------------------------------------------------
AJ4 RECHECK FOR DTC U0184 OR DTC U0184:00
- Clear continuous memory DTCs in all modules.
- Carry out the self-test for the following modules:
- APIM (if equipped)
- SDARS (if equipped)
- Is DTC U0184 or DTC U0184:00 still present?
Yes
For early-build vehicles with satellite radio and SYNC(R), GO to AJ5.
For all other vehicles, INSTALL a new ACM. REFER to Audio Control Module (ACM) Audio Control Module (ACM). REPEAT the self-test for the module that set DTC U0184/U0184:00. If the DTC is retrieved again, GO to AJ7 (vehicles without SYNC(R)) or GO to AJ8 (vehicles with SYNC(R)).
No
FOLLOW symptom-driven diagnostics for the observed symptom.
-------------------------------------------------
AJ5 RECHECK FOR DTC U0184 OR DTC U0184:00 SET IN MULTIPLE MODULES
- Review the recorded results from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0184/U0184:00 set in both the SDARS module and the APIM?
Yes
GO to AJ6.
No
INSTALL a new module for the module setting the DTC. REFER to Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) Module Service and Repair or Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). CLEAR all continuous DTCs from all modules. REPEAT the self-test for the module setting the DTC.
-------------------------------------------------
AJ6 CHECK FOR CORRECT ACM OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect all the ACM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the ACM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new ACM. REFER to Audio Control Module (ACM) Audio Control Module (ACM). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
-------------------------------------------------
AJ7 CHECK FOR CORRECT SDARS MODULE OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the SDARS module connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the SDARS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SDARS module. REFER to Satellite Digital Audio Receiver System (SDARS) Module Service and Repair. CLEAR all continuous DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
-------------------------------------------------
AJ8 CHECK FOR CORRECT APIM OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the APIM connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the APIM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Wait 2 minutes for the ACM to re-initialize.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new APIM. REFER to Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
