Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair




Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Shaft Seal









Removal

All vehicles

1. Remove the A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 2.3L Service and Repair or Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor - 4.0L Service and Repair.

Vehicles with leaf spring A/C clutch

2. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub retaining bolt.

1. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the Wrench.

2. Remove the bolt.





3. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub and the A/C clutch hub spacer.

1. Thread an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt into the A/C clutch disc and hub to force it from the compressor shaft.

2. Lift the A/C clutch disc and hub and the spacer from the compressor shaft.





Vehicles with 3-eye A/C clutch

4. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub retaining bolt.

1. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the Compressor Clutch Holding Fixture.

2. Remove the bolt.





5. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub and the A/C clutch hub spacer.

1. Thread an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt into the A/C clutch disc and hub to force it from the compressor shaft.

2. Lift the A/C clutch disc and hub and the A/C clutch hub spacer from the compressor shaft.





All vehicles

6. Remove the shaft seal felt from the nose of the A/C compressor with the O-Ring Seal Remover.





7. Clean the compressor nose area.

8. Insert the tip of the A/C Compressor Snap Ring Remover into one of the snap ring eyes.





9. Rotate the A/C Compressor Snap Ring Remover to position the tool tip and the snap ring eye closest to the A/C compressor shaft.





10. Pull the A/C Compressor Snap Ring Remover up quickly while keeping the A/C Compressor Snap Ring Remover shaft against the side of the nose opening and remove the snap ring.





11. Engage the A/C Compressor Shaft Oil Seal Remover into the inside diameter of the shaft seal.





12. Turn the A/C Compressor Shaft Oil Seal Remover handle clockwise to expand the A/C Compressor Shaft Oil Seal Remover tip inside of the shaft seal.





13. Pull the seal from the A/C compressor.





Installation

All vehicles

1. NOTICE: To prevent refrigerant system contamination, do not allow dirt or other foreign materials to enter the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor.

Clean the A/C compressor nose area.

2. Place the shaft seal on the A/C Compressor Shaft Oil Seal Protector. Lubricate the shaft seal and the A/C Compressor Shaft Oil Seal Remover with PAG oil.





3. Position the shaft seal and the A/C Compressor Shaft Oil Seal Protector over the A/C compressor shaft.





4. Push the shaft seal onto the A/C compressor shaft with the A/C Compressor Shaft Oil Seal Installer until seated.





5. Install the shaft seal snap ring.





6. Carry out the A/C Compressor-External Leak Test. For additional information, refer to Climate Control System - General Information and Diagnostics Climate Control System.

7. Install the shaft seal felt.





Vehicles with leaf spring A/C clutch

8. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.





9. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub retaining bolt.

1. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the Wrench.

2. Install and tighten the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt to 13 Nm (115 lb-in).





Vehicles with 3-eye A/C clutch

10. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub.





11. Install the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt.

1. Hold the A/C clutch disc and hub with the Compressor Clutch Holding Fixture.

2. Install and tighten the A/C clutch disc and hub bolt to 13 Nm (115 lb-in).





All vehicles

12. Measure and adjust the clutch air gap by removing or adding A/C clutch hub spacers.
