Clockspring

Removal

WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.

NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition is ON.

NOTE: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

1. Depower the SRS. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.

2. Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to Driver Air Bag Module Driver Air Bag Module.

3. NOTE: Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to Steering Column Removal and Replacement.

4. Remove the ignition lock cylinder. For additional information, refer to Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems Service and Repair.

5. Remove the 2 screws and position the hood release handle aside.

6. Remove the 2 screws from the steering column opening trim panel, pull out to release the clips and remove the lower steering column opening finish panel.

7. Remove the 5 bolts and steering column opening cover reinforcement.

8. If equipped, remove the tilt release lever/handle.

9. Remove the 3 screws and lower steering column shroud.

10. Position the upper steering column shroud up enough to access the clockspring clips.

11. Detach the clockspring wire harness from the wiring retainer.

12. Disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the harness ground wire.

- Release the pin-type retainers and disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors.

13. Release the lower clockspring clip.

14. Remove the screw, the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) antenna and the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch from the lock cylinder housing.

15. Release the remaining 2 clips and remove the clockspring.

Installation

Vehicles receiving a new clockspring

1. NOTE: A new clockspring is packaged in a centralized position and fixed in position with a key.

Remove the key from the clockspring, holding the rotor in its centralized position.

- Do not allow the clockspring rotor to turn.

Vehicles needing clockspring recentering

2. WARNING: If the clockspring is not correctly centralized, it may fail prematurely. If in doubt, repeat the centralizing procedure. Failure to follow these instructions may increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

NOTE: Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

NOTE: If a clockspring has rotated out of center, follow through with this step.

Centralize the clockspring.

1. Hold the clockspring outer housing stationary.

2. NOTICE: Overturning will destroy the clockspring. The internal ribbon wire acts as the stop and can be broken from its internal connection.

While holding the clockspring locking tab in the released position, turn the rotor counterclockwise, carefully feeling for the ribbon wire to run out of length and a slight resistance to be felt. Stop turning at this point.

3. While holding the clockspring locking tab in the released position, turn the clockspring clockwise approximately 2.25 turns. This is the center point of the clockspring.
- Do not allow the rotor to turn from this position.

All vehicles

3. Install the PATS antenna and the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch to the lock cylinder housing.

4. NOTE: Slight clockspring rotor turning is allowed for steering column alignment.

Install the clockspring.

- With the flats of the clockspring aligned to the flats of the steering column, slide the clockspring on the steering column.

- Engage the upper and side tabs.

5. Engage the lower clockspring clip.

6. Connect the clockspring electrical connectors.
- Install the ground wire.

- Connect the electrical connectors and attach the pin-type retainers.

7. Position the upper steering column shroud.

8. Position the lower steering column shroud and install the 3 screws.

9. Install the tilt release lever/handle.

10. Install the steering column opening cover reinforcement and 4 bolts.
- Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

11. Align the lower steering column opening trim panel and push in, seating the clips and install the 2 screws.

12. Position the hood release handle and install the 2 screws.

13. Install the ignition lock cylinder. For additional information, refer to Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems Service and Repair.

14. NOTE: Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

Install the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to Steering Column Removal and Replacement.

15. Install the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to Driver Air Bag Module Driver Air Bag Module.

16. Repower the SRS. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.
