Steering Column




Steering Column

NOTE: Steering column with automatic transmission shown, steering column with manual transmission similar.



















Removal and Installation

All vehicles

1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

2. Depower the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.

3. Remove the 2 hood release handle bolts and position the handle aside.

4. Remove the 2 screws, pull out and release the retaining clips and remove the steering column opening trim panel.

5. Remove the 5 steering column opening reinforcement bolts and the steering column opening reinforcement.
- To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).

6. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
- Detach the ignition switch harness pin-type retainer from the steering column support bracket.

7. Disconnect the multifunction switch electrical connector.

8. Disconnect the 2 clockspring electrical connectors.

Vehicles with automatic transmission

9. Remove the selector lever indicator bolt and the selector lever indicator.
- To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).

10. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever and the steering column bracket.

All vehicles

11. Disconnect the brake shift interlock solenoid electrical connector.

12. NOTE: Secure the steering column in place so it will not turn after the pinch bolt is removed.

Remove the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt and disconnect the shaft from the steering column.

- Discard the bolt.

- To install, tighten the new bolt to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).

13. Remove the steering column support bracket nuts and the steering column.
- To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).

14. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
