Pinpoint Test E: The Speedometer Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the vehicle speed signal from the PCM (non-hybrid) and from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (hybrid) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The PCM (non-hybrid) or TCM (Transmission Control Module) (hybrid) receive the vehicle speed data from the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. The IC (Instrument Cluster) monitors the vehicle speed input from the PCM or TCM (Transmission Control Module) and commands the speedometer with a corresponding movement of the pointer.
If the IC (Instrument Cluster) receives invalid vehicle speed data from the PCM/TCM (Transmission Control Module) for 5 seconds or less, the IC (Instrument Cluster) defaults the speedometer to the last setting, based upon the last known good vehicle speed message.
If the IC (Instrument Cluster) does not receive the vehicle speed data from the PCM/TCM (Transmission Control Module), the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0100 (non-hybrid) or U0101 (hybrid) in continuous memory and defaults the speedometer to 0 km/h (0 mph).
If the IC (Instrument Cluster) receives invalid data for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U2197 and defaults the speedometer to 0 km/h (0mph).
NOTE: If DTC U0100 is set in the IC (Instrument Cluster), other observable symptoms may be an inoperative tachometer, temperature gauge (non-hybrid) or odometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PCM (non-hybrid)
- TCM (Transmission Control Module) (hybrid)
- IC (Instrument Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST E : THE SPEEDOMETER IS INOPERATIVE
E1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) AND TCM (Transmission Control Module) SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded DTCs from the PCM Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and TCM (Transmission Control Module) self-tests.
Are any PCM or TCM (Transmission Control Module) DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.
No
GO to E2.
E2 CARRY OUT THE SPEEDOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.
- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) speedometer (SPDOMETER) active command. Command the speedometer on and off while monitoring the speedometer.
Does the speed begin at 0 km/h (0 mph) move to 193 km/h (120 mph) and return to 0 km/h (0 mph)?
Yes
GO to E3.
No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
E3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100, GO to Pinpoint Test AV Pinpoint Test AV: DTC U0100.
For DTC U0101, GO to Pinpoint Test AW Pinpoint Test AW: DTC U0101.
For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes.
No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
