Pinpoint Test J: The Electric Power Charge/Assist Gauge Is Inoperative (Hybrid)

Normal Operation

The electric power charge/assist gauge indicates the amount of the electric power to and from the traction battery. The gauge provides the vehicle hybrid electric system current working status. This gauge consists of the charge range (left side of the gauge) and the assist range (right side of the gauge), both displayed in kilowatts. The charge side of the gauge indicates the amount of electrical energy sent to the traction battery that is generated by the internal combustion engine generator and the regenerative braking system of the vehicle and ranges from maximum charge power to 0 power. The assist side of the gauge indicates the amount of electrical energy being drawn out of the traction battery used to power the electric drive motor and ranges from 0 power to maximum assist/boost power. If the pointer remains in the middle point of the gauge, it indicates no electric charge and no assist. The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the electric power charge/assist input from the Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery (BCM-HVTB) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus.

If the electric power charge/assist data is missing or deemed invalid for more than 5 seconds, the IC (Instrument Cluster) sets DTC U0111 and defaults the gauge to the full LH stop on the gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery)

- IC (Instrument Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST J : THE ELECTRIC POWER CHARGE/ASSIST GAUGE IS INOPERATIVE (HYBRID)

J1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any BCM-HVTB (Battery Control Module - High Voltage Traction Battery) DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Body Control Systems.

No
GO to J2.

J2 CARRY OUT THE ELECTRIC POWER CHARGE/ASSIST GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC (Instrument Cluster) DataLogger.

- Select the IC (Instrument Cluster) charge gauge (CHRG_GAUGE) and the assist gauge (ASSIST_GAUGE) active commands. Command the charge and assist gauge on and off. The gauge should sweep to the left for charge and to the right for assist.

Does the gauge sweep from the center position to the left when charge is commanded on and to the right when assist is commanded on then reset to the mid-point of the scale when commanded off?

Yes
GO to J3.

No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

J3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC (Instrument Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC (Instrument Cluster) DTCs from the self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0111, GO to Pinpoint Test AX Pinpoint Test AX: DTC U0111.

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes.

No
INSTALL a new IC (Instrument Cluster). REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
