Pinpoint Tests

Pinpoint Test AF: The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) Are Inoperative

Normal Operation

When the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the headlamps are not on (from the autolamp system or manual control from the headlamp switch) and the transaxle is not in PARK (P), the Smart Junction Box (SJB) provides a pulse-width modulated voltage to the low beam headlamps. This illuminates the headlamps at a reduced intensity.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Exterior lighting system input/output

- SJB (Smart Junction Box) configuration

- Ignition switch input

- Transaxle gear input

- SJB (Smart Junction Box)

PINPOINT TEST AF : THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) ARE INOPERATIVE

AF1 VERIFY THE DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) OPERATION

- Place the gear selector lever in any gear other than PARK (P).

Are the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) illuminated?

Yes
The system is operating correctly. INFORM the customer of the conditions required for the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) to operate correctly.

No
If equipped with halogen headlamps, GO to AF2.

If equipped with HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, GO to AF3.

AF2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE HEADLAMPS

- Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position and observe the headlamps.

Do the headlamps operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AF4.

No
REFER to Headlamps Special Tool(s) Used With Diagnostics.

AF3 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE FOG LAMPS

- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position and engage the fog lamp switch.

Do the fog lamps operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AF4.

No
REFER to Fog Lamps Special Tool(s) Used With Diagnostics.

AF4 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH INPUT

- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB (Smart Junction Box) DataLogger.

- Monitor the SJB (Smart Junction Box) ignition switch PIDs (IGN_A_ECU, IGN_O_ECU, IGN_R_ECU, IGN_S_ECU) while cycling the ignition switch through all positions.

Does the PID agree with the ignition switch positions?

Yes
GO to AF5.

No
REFER to Steering Column to diagnose the input from the ignition switch.

AF5 CHECK THE TRANSAXLE GEAR INPUT

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM DataLogger.

- Monitor the PCM transmission gear status PID (TR) while placing the gear selector lever through all positions.

Does the PID agree with the gear selection?

Yes
GO to AF6.

No
REFER to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems to diagnose the transmission range input.

AF6 CHECK THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) FOR DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) CONFIGURATION

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB (Smart Junction Box) Module Programming.

- Check the SJB (Smart Junction Box) configuration and make sure the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) feature is enabled.

Is the SJB (Smart Junction Box) DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) configuration enabled?

Yes
INSTALL a new SJB (Smart Junction Box). TEST the system for normal operation.

No
ENABLE the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) configuration. TEST the system for normal operation.
