Pinpoint Test N: The Smart Unlock Is Inoperative

Normal Operation

For vehicles without Intelligent Access (IA), when the key is in the ignition lock cylinder and the door lock control switch is pressed to lock the doors with any door ajar the Body Control Module (BCM) automatically unlocks all the doors. This feature helps prevent the keys from being locked in the vehicle by unlocking the doors if the key is in the ignition and either front door is ajar.

For vehicles with IA (Intelligent Access), the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module sends a message over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) to the BCM (Body Control Module) to command all doors to unlock to prevent an IA (Intelligent Access) key from being inadvertently locked inside the vehicle. When the vehicle is locked using the door lock control switch with the door ajar and then closed, the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module searches the interior of the vehicle for an IA (Intelligent Access) key. The RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module searches the interior of the vehicle by activating all 3 low frequency passive start antennas. If an IA (Intelligent Access) key is inside the vehicle the signal from the passive start antennas activate the IA (Intelligent Access) key, and it sends a signal back to the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module through the Remote Functions Receiver (RFR) module. If the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module detects there is an IA (Intelligent Access) key inside the vehicle, it sends a command to the BCM (Body Control Module) to unlock all of the doors.

The vehicle can still be locked with the key in the ignition (vehicles without IA (Intelligent Access)) or a key inside the vehicle (vehicles with IA (Intelligent Access)), a key in the door lock cylinder, or the lock button on another Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Key-in-ignition switch (vehicles without IA (Intelligent Access))

- Door ajar switch input

- IA (Intelligent Access) key

PINPOINT TEST N : THE SMART UNLOCK DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

N1 CHECK THE DOOR LOCK OPERATION

- Check the operation of the door locks from the door lock control switch.

Do all of the doors lock and unlock?

Yes
GO to N2.

No
IDENTIFY the correct symptom and GO to Symptom Chart - Electrical Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.

N2 CHECK THE COURTESY LAMP OPERATION

- Open and close the left and right front doors while checking the courtesy lamp operation.

Do the courtesy lamps operate correctly?

Yes
For vehicles without IA (Intelligent Access), REFER to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators to DIAGNOSE the key-in-ignition warning chime.

For vehicles with IA (Intelligent Access), REFER to Antitheft and Alarm Systems to DIAGNOSE the IA (Intelligent Access) key and passive start antennas.

No
REFER to Lighting and Horns to DIAGNOSE the door ajar inputs.
