Instrument cluster, removing and installing

Vehicles with airbag

WARNING!
Airbags and related equipment (e.g. steering wheel) must only be disassembled, assembled and repaired by trained Audi Service Department personnel.
^ Disconnecting the battery alone will NOT prevent the accidental deployment of the airbag(s).
^ Before working on any airbag, instrument panel or steering column component, always disconnect the airbag power supply harness connector(s).


CAUTION!
Before working on any part of the electrical system:
^ Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.
^ Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.

- Disconnect airbag power supply connector and remove airbag.
- Continue below (All Vehicles)


Vehicles without airbag

Note: The steering wheel (horn) cover is secured to the steering wheel with two clips. Carefully pull firmly on the upper half of the cover to release then do the same for the lower half. Press cover to one side and remove.

- Remove steering wheel (horn) cover.
- Disconnect horn connector.


All vehicles

- Remove steering wheel nut and steering wheel.
Torque: 40 Nm (30 ft lb)




- Loosen steering column switch clamp and pull switch upward.
- Disconnect steering column switch connectors and remove steering column switches.




For steering column switch with socket-head clamping bolt:
- Carefully insert a 4 mm hex-key into steering column switch clamping bolt as shown.
Use care not to scratch steering column trim.
- Loosen clamping bolt and pull switch upward.
Torque: 2.5 Nm (22 in lb)
- Disconnect steering column switch connectors and remove steering column switches.

WARNING! Airbags and related equipment (e.g. steering wheel) must only be disassembled, assembled and repaired by trained Audi Service Department personnel.




- Remove instrument cluster mounting screws (arrows).
- Place clean, soft towel or equivalent over exposed portion of steering column.
- Carefully fold back instrument cluster; be careful not to scratch face plate.
- Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors from behind.
- Remove instrument cluster.


Installation is in reverse order of removal.
