Performing Basic Setting Checks

REQUIREMENTS
- Engine coolant temperature 85°C (185°F) minimum
- Accelerator Pedal not pushed down
- All electrical consumers switched OFF
- A/C switched OFF; press fan speed "minus" button in A/C control head repeatedly until all displays are erased
- Automatic transmission selector lever in P or N position
- No malfunctions stored in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory

PROCEDURE
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool. Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG Scan Tool With MMS 311 Engine Management System
- Start engine and let idle.
^ Be sure that vehicle meets requirements.
- Drive vehicle for a minimum 5 minutes, choosing a route that does not have any stops (if possible). Leave engine running.
- Advance through program until display appears as shown:

02 - Check DTC Memory

- Check DTC memory for stored codes. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

If malfunctions are stored in DTC memory:
- Repair the malfunction(s).
- Erase DTC memory.
- Stop engine (switch ignition OFF) and start again.
- Drive vehicle for a minimum 5 minutes, choosing a route that does not have any stops (if possible). Leave engine running.
- Check DTC memory again.

If No malfunctions are stored in DTC memory:
- Let engine idle.
- Advance through program until display appears as shown:

- Press 0 and 4 buttons to select function 04 "Basic Setting"
- Display will appear as shown:

If display appear as shown:

Function unknown or -->
cannot be carried out at the moment


- Check for correct ECM version. Refer to Check Control Module Version. Check Control Module Version
- Perform checks for DTC # 00516 in Diagnostic Trouble Code Charts. With MMS 311 Engine Management System
- Correct fault as necessary.

If display appear as shown:

- Press 0 button three times to select basic setting display group 000.
- Press Q button to enter input
- Display will appear as shown:

NOTES:
It is possible to select other display groups but they are not needed for engine basic setting and are identical to those described under "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08.
The scan tool does not display zeros in display group numbers.
The displayed values for channels 1 to 10 are in decimal form.
If the printer is switched ON, the current display will be printed out.
Actual engine values are displayed in this block of ten display fields. If the engine is OK, the actual data must correspond to the specified display values. Idle mixture is adjusted automatically in engine basic setting by O2S control adaptive learning.

- Compare the displayed values to the values in Basic Setting Specified Values. Basic Setting Specified Values, Display Group 000

- Within 5 minutes of test drive compare values in display field 9 with specified values. If the vehicle idles longer than 5 minutes, the specified value can be exceeded without a malfunction being present.

If the specified values are obtained in all channels:
- Press the "Arrow" button
- Display will appear as shown:
