Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

NOTE: On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Also refer to Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.

1. Vehicles with audio coded antitheft system refer to Radio/Stereo, Service Precautions.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove three upper engine to transmission attaching bolts, then the transmission ground strap.
5. Remove electrical connectors for speedometer and multi-function sender by pressing in clips.
6. Disconnect catalytic converter connector, then remove transmission assembly protection plate.
7. Remove Exhaust manifold bolts, then the front exhaust pipe.
8. Remove the rear crossmember, then the automatic seat belt tensioning cables at transmission.
9. Remove shift rod, bellhousing cover plate, then the driveshaft protection plate.
10. Disconnect axle shafts from transmission, turn steering to right lock, then tie axle shafts to body.
11. Remove clutch slave cylinder, then the steering bracket.
12. Install engine support 10-222A or equivalent, then support transmission with transmission support VAG 1383, or equivalent.
13. Remove left rear transmission strut, then the front engine mount.
14. Remove lower engine to transmission bolts, then lower transmission from vehicle.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Ensure centering (dowel) sleeves are installed in cylinder block.
b. Press clutch slave cylinder in with lever until bolt can be easily installed. A replacement bolt for mounting clutch slave cylinder is available with a pointed tip for easier installation.
c. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.
