Battery: Description and Operation
Battery Components:
CAUTION!
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Obtain anti-theft radio security code.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
For automatic transmission vehicles, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) "Basic Setting" must be reestablished using the VAG1557 Scan Tool (ST), whenever the battery has been disconnected or replaced during a repair.
1 - Filler cap
2 - Positive (B+) terminal
- Larger diameter than negative (-)terminal
- Clean off any oxidation
- Grease lightly with acid-resistant grease
3 - Electrolyte level mark
- If necessary, fill to mark with distilled water
4 - Negative plate
- Color: metallic gray
5 - Separator
- Insulator
6 - Positive plate
- Color: dark brown
7 - Negative (-) terminal
- Smaller diameter than positive (B+) terminal
- Clean off any oxidation
- Grease lightly with acid-resistant grease
