The E46 is a totally new vehicle and is the next evolution in the 3 series development. It is being introduced as a 1999 model in both 323i and 328i four door sedan versions. The coupe and convertible models will be introduced in later production run.

The new 3 series vehicle offers more comfort, safety, space and equipment without compromising the sporty characteristics of the 3 series vehicle.

Two engine variants will be offered, including the 2.5 and 2.8 liter displacements. Both engines meet the LEV emission control requirements and include changes and design improvements that will be covered in the engine/engine management sections.

A new GM 5-speed automatic transmission will be offered with AGS control.

The front and rear suspensions are similar to the E36 with added use of aluminum components and design changes to enhance ride and handling.

The low aerodynamic drag of the E46 sedans is 0.31 (CD).
