SUBJECT
DME MS45.1/MS45: Fault Code 281D

MODEL
E46 with M56 (MS45.1) and M54 (MS45.1) produced 02/19/03 - 07/02/03
E85 with M54 (MS45.0) produced 02/24/03-06/12/03

SITUATION
The charging indicator light is illuminated sporadically after the vehicle is started. Fault code 281D (10629): "BSD Generator signal implausible" is stored in the DME control module.

CAUSE
Excessive voltage drop (below 7 volts) during start-up caused by low battery state of charge.
Communication error between DME and alternator when the ignition switch is being turned extremely fast.

PROCEDURE
Make sure the battery is fully charged. On a customer complaint basis and in case of a verified complaint reprogram DME with the current Progman version. The improved DME software was introduced since DIS CD V35.
