The following article has been updated by technical service bulletin (TSB) 51 16 09. This TSB was originally published in April 2009, revised in August 2009 and most recently revised in September 2010.

SUBJECT
Rattle Noise from the Radio Area

MODEL
E90, E91, E92, E93 (3 Series) produced up to 12/2008 and equipped with Navigation (SA 609)

SITUATION
While driving over rough roads, a rattling noise may be heard from the area of the radio or IHKA control unit.

CAUSE
Relative movement between the lower retaining bracket for the Car Communication Computer (CCC) or Car Information Computer (CIC), and the plastic housing to which it is secured

CORRECTION
Isolate the lower retaining bracket with felt tape.

PROCEDURE
The September 2010 procedure from the TSB is included immediately below:

The problem has been integrated into ISTA diagnostics. Follow the diagnosis test plan, using the latest ISTA version. In "Information Search", select the "Function Structure" tab. Select Body, Noises, Instrument Panel, then press "Start Search". Select test plan "B5116_E90MECH1 - Dashboard, center console".

The August 2009 procedure from the TSB is included immediately below:
1. Remove the CCC/CIC per Repair Instruction REP 65 83 010







2. Remove the lower retaining bracket (1) by removing the 2 screws (2) securing it.







3. Apply four 5mm lengths of felt tape to the locations shown (1). These are the areas contacted by the lower retaining bracket when it is secured.

4. Secure the bracket over the segments of felt tape.

5. Reinstall the CCC/CIC and road-test to ensure the noise has been eliminated.
