Engine Control Module: Testing and Inspection

Flow Of Diagnosis:

1. Verify that the problem exists and verify whether the problem is a intermittent or a constant problem. DO NOT use the A-CHARTS or TROUBLE CODE CHARTS for diagnosing intermittent problems. For further information use DRIVEABILITY WORKSHEET AND VEHICLE REPAIR HISTORY forms under INFO TYPE/TECHNICAL/MANAGEMENT SUPPORT.

2. Verify proper Fuel Delivery (Fuel System).

^ Verify engine is functioning properly i.e.. compression test.

^ Move all primary wires, connectors and battery cables by pushing, pulling and twisting by hand. If any bad connectors or corroded connections are found, make necessary repairs to wire or connector.

^ Disconnect secondary wire from ignition coil. Visually inspect the coil and ignition wires. Check vehicle's maintenance schedule to ensure spark plugs and wires have been properly maintained.

3. Check for updated diagnostic procedures, warranty or recall information.

4. See PROM ID under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.

5. This checks the "On Car Diagnostics" and displays all codes if any are present. If codes 17, 41, 42, 43, or 48 are present then refer to DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS/TROUBLE CODE CHARTS. If there are stored codes other than those listed above, refer to COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. This will lead to the proper test.
