Rear Axle Disassemble

^ Tools Required:
- J 42155
- J 25070





1. Remove axle lubricant drain plug and drain lubricant.





2. Remove axle lubricant fill plug (1), washer (2) lubricant fill tag (3).





3. Remove the vehicle speed sensor bolt and vehicle speed sensor.





4. Remove the right side differential cover bolts and right differential cover. Discard the O-ring.





5. Install two 10 mm nuts on stud to remove stud from block. Remove the right side transmission mounting stud.
6. Remove the right side transmission stud mount bolts and stud mount from the differential.





7. Remove the snap ring from the right side output shaft.
8. Remove the differential case assembly from the differential carrier using J 42155.





9. Remove the rear differential cover bolts and the rear differential cover. Discard the O-ring.





10. Remove the pinion cartridge bolts.





11. Heat the differential carrier around the pinion cartridge using J 25070.





12. Remove the pinion cartridge from the differential carrier by threading two long bolts (1) into the pinion cartridge.





13. Remove the pinion cartridge from the differential carrier housing.
14. Remove the pinion cartridge shim pack from the differential carrier.
15. Tag shim pack to indicate the position it was removed from.





16. Remove the left side differential cover bolts and the left differential cover. Discard the O-ring.
