Audio System - Reduced Volume On AM Band

Bulletin No.: 06-08-44-030

Date: September 19, 2006

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Reduced Audio Volume Level When First Tuned to AM Radio or Loss of Volume After Signal Strength Reduction (Reprogram Radio)

Models:
2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR
2007 Pontiac G5, Solstice
2007 Saturn ION, SKY, VUE

with US8 or US9 Radio

Condition

Some customers may comment on the following conditions:

A period of reduced audio volume when first tuning to an AM radio station or when changing from another band (XM or FM) to AM.

A loss of volume when the AM signal strength is reduced suddenly (as when driving into a garage, parking structure or under a bridge).

Cause

This radio includes a "soft mute" feature which is intended to mute the audio volume when a weak station is selected. The "soft mute" feature may not return the audio volume to the previous volume level as quickly as intended.

Correction

DO NOT replace the radio for this condition.

It is important to always use the correct utility file when programming a radio. Never use a utility file intended for another radio RPO in an attempt to resolve a concern. Using an incorrect file may result in permanent damage to the radio. To select the correct utility file, first determine the radio RPO (US8 or US9), and then determine if the vehicle is equipped with an audio amplifier (WBM, UZ6 or UQ3).

Reprogram the radio with the latest available calibrations (TIS 9.5 2006 or later) using the latest radio utility file. These calibrations will become available on TIS2Web on September 18, 2006. These calibrations will be available on the TIS 9.5 2006 CD and satellite broadcast later in September.

Refer to Radio Setup in SI for more information on reprogramming the radio.

After reprogramming, use the Tech 2(R) to confirm the complete 17-digit VIN is in the radio. If the VIN is not in the radio, manually enter the full 17-digit VIN using the Tech 2(R).
