Cylinder Head Replacement

Tools Required

Removal Procedure

1. Relieve fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Service and Repair.
2. Remove the supercharger. Refer to Supercharger Replacement Service and Repair.
3. Remove the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement Service and Repair.
4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
5. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Housing Removal Service and Repair.
6. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
7. Remove the timing chain. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement Service and Repair.
8. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Service and Repair.






9. Remove the cylinder head bolts in sequence and discard.
10. Swap intake camshaft a, caps, cam shafts, etc. Refer to Intake Camshaft, Bearing Cap, and Lash Adjuster Removal Service and Repair.
11. Swap exhaust cap bolts, caps, cam shafts, etc. Refer to Exhaust Camshaft, Bearing Cap, and Lash Adjuster Removal Service and Repair.






12. Remove the cylinder head and gasket.
13. Clean all gasket surfaces.

Installation Procedure






1. Install the cylinder head and gasket.
2. Install NEW cylinder head bolts.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.






3. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence.

Tighten
Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft) plus 155 degrees.






4. Install the NEW front cylinder head bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the front cylinder head bolts to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).

5. Swap exhaust cap bolts, caps, cam shafts, etc. Refer to Exhaust Camshaft, Bearing Cap, and Lash Adjuster Removal Service and Repair.
6. Swap intake cap bolts, caps, cam shafts, etc. Refer to Intake Camshaft, Bearing Cap, and Lash Adjuster Removal Service and Repair.
7. Install the timing chain. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement Service and Repair.
8. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement Service and Repair.
11. Install the supercharger. Refer to Supercharger Replacement Service and Repair.
12. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Service and Repair.
