Bumper: Description and Operation

Bumper and Fascia Description

General Motors passenger vehicle bumpers are designed in order to withstand a collision into a fixed barrier at 4 km/h (2.5 mph). After absorbing the energy of the collision, the energy absorbers rebound to 80-90 percent of their original position. The energy absorbing capability of the front bumper and the rear bumper systems is achieved through a foam type energy absorbing structure in each bumper.

The following components are made of thermo plastic olefin or urethane:

* The front bumper fascia
* The rear bumper fascia

The thermo plastic olefin and urethane perform the following functions:

* Withstand minor impact
* Return to the original shape

Refer to General Plastic Repair () for repair or refinishing information on the fascia.

Use care around the theft deterrent labels.
