Oil Pump: Service and Repair

Engine oiling system:

When servicing oil pump, if inlet tube is moved out of position a new inlet tube and screen assembly must be installed.

The oil pump is located in the oil pan thus necessitating removal of the pan to gain access to the pump.

Oil pump removal or replacement will not affect distributor timing as the distributor drive gear remains in mesh with the camshaft gear.

Upon disassembly of the oil pump, place a straightedge across gears and pump body and check clearance between straightedge and pump body which should be .006---.004 inch. Clearance between gears and pump housing should be .0005---.0025 inch.

The pump cover should be installed with the pump out of the engine and pump checked for freedom of operation before installation.

The oil pressure relief valve, which is built into the pump, is not adjustable, the correct pressure being built into the relief valve spring.
