Test 10 - Ignition Relay Testing

IGNITION RELAY

The following is a list of the terminal numbers and what they are connected to:

TERMINAL DESCRIPTION

1 VIO/WT Connected to terminal 4 in the energized position, this supplies voltage to the operated device.
2 BLK Connected to the electromagnet and grounded.
4 RD/BL Has battery voltage supplied to it when the relay is energized and none when the relay is de-energized.
5 YEL Connected to the electromagnet and to the ignition switch.

1. With a voltmeter, measure the voltage at terminal 4, there should be battery voltage at all times. If not check battery connections, wiring harness, and fuse/fuse link.
2. Check that there is voltage at terminal 5 when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. If not check the ignition switch and wiring harness.
3. Check that terminal 2 of the relay is grounded, if not repair as necessary.
4. Check that there is battery voltage at terminal 1 when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position. If not as specified and all the above checks were OK replace relay
5. With an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 5. The ohmmeter should indicate a resistance value of 75 +/- 5 ohms. If not within specifications, replace ignition relay.
NOTE: Resistance values are approximate and should be used as a guideline only.
6. If all above checks were OK go to TEST 11
