Removal

TIMING BELT REMOVAL
1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined under Service Precautions.
2. Remove engine undercover.
3. Remove timing belt and covers in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 27, noting following:

a. With tool No. MB990767, or equivalent, in place to keep crankshaft from turning, remove crankshaft bolt.

b. Turn crankshaft clockwise to align each timing mark and to set No. 1 cylinder at compression TDC, Fig. 14.
c. Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt.

d. Set a screwdriver to timing belt tensioner and press it fully back in direction of arrow, Fig. 28.
e. Temporarily tighten timing belt tensioner bolt in slackened position
f. Remove timing belt. If timing belt is to be reinstalled, use chalk to mark flat side of belt with an arrow indicating direction of rotation (right turn).
