Component Tests and General Diagnostics

NOTE: Speed Proportional Steering (SPS) is designed to simplify steering--most noticeably from zero to around 60 mph. (Optional equipment on some models).

NOTE: To verify operation of speed proportional steering based on subjective feel, use the "SPD PROP STEER" test.

NOTE: Before performing this test, three criteria must be met as listed below. Any one of these criteria not seen will result in the test being discontinued.
1. Position gear selector in park.
2. Apply the brake.
3. Start the engine.

NOTE: When the SPD PROP STEER test is invoked, the speedometer will display approximately 60mph, and the steering wheel will require more effort to turn. At this point, feel for the steering to be moved with less ease, then take your foot off the brake and feel for the steering to be moved more easily. By doing this 6 to 10 times, the difference in steering should be noticeable.

If you find that speed proportional steering is not performing properly, check for the following possible cause(s):

- Open or short on the vehicle speed sensor circuit
- Open on the ground circuit
- Open or short on the fused ignition switch output circuit
- Pigtail disconnected between SPS module and solenoid control valve
- Possible short internal to the SPS module
- Possible short internal to the TCM

NOTE: For help diagnosing the above causes, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/ Transmission Control Systems/ Testing and Inspection/ Trouble Code Diagnostic Charts (Diagnostic Charts)/ Diagnostic Tests/ 39A For Speed Proportional Steering.
