Fuel Injector: Service and Repair





The Fuel Injector, is a solenoid operated valve that meters fuel flow to the engine. The injector is opened and closed a constant number of times per crank revolution. The amount of fuel is controlled by the length of time it is held open.

The injector is normally closed and is operated by a signal from the Electronic Engine Control (EEC) module.

NOTE: Low pressure injectors have low coil resistance. High pressure injectors can have either high or low coil resistance. Function can be adversely affected by using the wrong injectors.

NOTE: Do not apply battery voltage directly to the injector electrical connector terminals. The solenoid may be damaged internally in a matter of seconds.

INJECTOR REPLACEMENT

Disassembly
1. Remove the fuel injector retaining screw and retainer.
2. Remove the injector assembly and lower O-ring.

Assembly
1. Lubricate the new lower O-ring and injector seat area with clean engine oil. (Do not use transmission oil.)
2. Install the lower O-ring on the injector.
3. Lubricate the upper O-ring, clean and lubricate the throttle body O-ring seat.
4. Install the injector by centering and applying a steady downward pressure with a slight rotational force.
5. Install the injector retainer and retaining screw.
6. Tighten retainer screw to 2.0-2.5 N-m (18-22 in. lbs.).
