Starter Solenoid: Testing and Inspection

4-143/2.3L ENGINE
Pull-In Test
1. Disconnect field coil wire from M terminal of solenoid.
2. Connect 12 volt battery between S terminal and M terminal. Test must be performed in less than 10 seconds.
3. If pinion does not move outward, replace solenoid.
Hold-In Test
1. Disconnect field coil wire from M terminal of magnetic switch.
2. Connect 12 volt battery between S terminal and body.
3. If pinion moves inward, replace solenoid.
Return Test
1. Disconnect field coil wire from M terminal of magnetic switch.
2. Connect 12 volt battery between M terminal and body. Test must be performed in less than 10 seconds.
3. Pull pinion outward and release. If pinion does not quickly return to its original position, replace solenoid.
