Connecting Rod: Service and Repair

During removal of piston and rod assemblies, mark cylinder number on connecting rod and bearing cap to facilitate installation in their original positions. If oversize pistons are required, they must be installed in sets of four. Connecting rods have the letter ``D'' cast into them, Fig. 24. Pistons should be installed with the arrow on the top of the piston and the ``D'' on the connecting rod toward the front of the engine. Numbers marked on the connecting rod and bearing caps during disassembly, must be on the same side when installed into their cylinder bores. If a connecting rod is ever transposed from one block or cylinder to another, new bearings should be fitted and the connecting rod should be numbered to correspond with the new cylinder.
