Injection Timing: Adjustments

C4-143 TURBO DIESEL ENGINE

1. Remove top timing belt cover.
2. Rotate engine until No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Refer to Fig. 2 to ensure timing marks are in proper position.
3. If engine temperature is below 122° F, bypass cold start mechanism as follows:
a. Insert screwdriver as shown in Fig. 3 and rotate fast idle lever.
b. Insert a suitable spacer or wrench at least .27 inch thick between cold start advance lever and cold start device.
4. Loosen the two mounting bolts and nuts attaching injection pump to mounting bracket and front cover.
5. To prevent delivery valve holders from turning with the fuel nuts, loosen, but do not remove the nuts attaching fuel lines to injection pump using a suitable wrench.
6. Remove timing plug bolt from center of fuel injection pump hydraulic head.
7. Install timing adapter tool No. 014-00303 or equivalent into the port in hydraulic head, then mount suitable dial indicator in timing adapter with a minimum preload of .10 inch, Fig. 4.
8. Rotate crankshaft about 30° counterclockwise, then zero dial indicator.
9. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to 5° ATDC and check that dial indicator indicates .0383---.0405 inch.
10. If timing is not as specified in step 9, rotate injection pump body until dial indicator indicates specification. Rotate pump clockwise if reading is more than specification or counterclockwise if less than specification.
11. Torque injection pump mounting nuts to 11---15 ft. lbs. and mounting bolts to 15---19 ft. lbs. After tightening mounting nuts and bolts, repeat steps 8 and 9 to ensure injection timing has not changed.
12. Torque fuel line nuts at injection pump to 17---26 ft. lbs.
13. Install injection timing plug bolt and gasket, then torque to 10---14 ft. lbs.
14. Install upper timing belt cover, then run engine and check for fuel leaks at the injection pump.
