Engine: Service and Repair


1985---87 4-140 EFI ENGINE
1. Raise hood, mark hood hinge locations, then remove hood.
2. Drain coolant from radiator.
3. Disconnect air cleaner outlet tube from throttle body, idle speed control hose and heat riser tube.
4. Disconnect battery cables.
5. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine.
6. Remove radiator shroud attaching screws, radiator upper supports, then the shroud and fan assembly.
7. Remove radiator.
8. Remove oil filler cap.
9. Disconnect coil wire from coil.
10. Mark, then disconnect all electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from engine.
11. Disconnect accelerator cable and transmission kickdown rod, if equipped.
12. Remove A/C compressor from mounting bracket and position aside. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines from compressor.
13. Disconnect power brake vacuum hose.
14. Disconnect two push connector fittings from engine fuel rail.
15. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
16. Remove engine mount nuts.
17. Raise and support vehicle.
18. Drain engine oil from crankcase.
19. Remove starter motor.
20. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
21. Remove dust cover or torque converter inspection plate, if equipped.
22. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove flywheel housing cover attaching bolts. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, remove torque converter to flywheel attaching bolts.
23. Lower vehicle.
24. Support transmission and flywheel or converter housing with a suitable jack.
25. Remove flywheel housing or converter housing upper attaching bolts.
26. Install suitable engine lifting equipment onto engine, then carefully raise engine from vehicle.
27. Reverse procedure to install.
