Engine Short Block - Replacement Information

90ford21 ENGINE - 2.3L OHC - SHORT BLOCK ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT REQUIRES A NEW STAMPED OIL PAN

ISSUE: A new stamped oil pan assembly must be used instead of the original cast aluminum oil pan assembly when replacing a short block assembly. This is necessary because the original oil pan assembly can not be sealed with the replacement short block assembly. An oil leak could result because the narrow rails on the the lower block and the rails on the cast aluminum oil pan do not match.

ACTION: If short block assembly replacement is required, install a new stamped oil pan assembly. Refer to the appropriate 1985-88 Ranger-Bronco II Shop Manual, Section 21-05, for service details and the parts block for correct parts usage.
NOTE: THE OIL DIPSTICK NEEDS TO BE RECALIBRATED FOR THE STAMPED OIL PAN. USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE TO RECALIBRATE IT.

1. Change the oil and install a new oil filter.

2. After adding four (4) quarts of oil, proceed as follows:

a. Start the engine and run it for approximately 4-5 minutes.

b. Stop the engine and wait five (5) minutes.

c. Check the oil level with the dipstick.

d. Mark a notch on the oil dipstick with a file indicating the four (4) quart level, which is the add one (1) quart mark.
3. Add one (1) quart of oil.

4. Repeat the above procedure and mark a notch on the oil dipstick indicating FULL.
